Balloon sinuplasty
Balloon sinuplasty is a modern method of treating patients suffering from chronic nasal sinustitis. The treatment focuses on widening the natural ostiums of the frontal sinus, sphenoid sinus and maxillary sinus by means of a balloon. A catheter with a balloon is inserted through the base of the nose. The balloon is inserted in the place of coarctation and later filled with physiological saline. When the nasal meatus reaches the appropriate width, the fluid is evacuated from the balloon and the catheter together with the balloon are removed from the nose. The procedure is characterized by minimal tissue damage; therefore, healing is quicker and the risk of postoperative complications (re-obliteration f the ostium) is minimal. The procedure is executed in general anaesthesia and can be performed in the one-day surgery mode. Balloon sinuplasty is quickly gaining popularity and recognition among doctors and patients throughout the world. Although is it a new method, it has already gained the recognition of the American Rhinologic Society (ARS) and American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
